Title: 3D printed batteries (3Dbats)

This project aims to take advantage of 3D metal printing to develop three-dimensional electrodes, on which the active layer is deposited. The 3D electrodes increase the surface area of the active material thus increasing energy storage capacity. The ions can also travel in various directions to reach the opposite electrodes thus reducing charging time. In other words, this research aims to decouple the energy density from the power density by developing a new battery which would be a disruptive technology. This project will develop analytical techniques and simulations which provide the foundation for a new battery technology that has high energy storage capacity and high fast charging potential.
