M.A in Matrimonial Canon Law

The Master of Arts in Matrimonial Canon Law and Jurisprudence is a professional interdisciplinary programme offering an in-depth study of canonical legislation, jurisprudence, and procedures related to marriage.

Degrees and Duration: Graduates earn a Postgraduate Diploma after two years of lectures, followed by a Master’s degree upon completing an additional year of dissertation work.

Career Opportunities: Graduates of both degrees are equipped to assist clients in marriage procedures before ecclesiastical tribunals. Furthermore, the programme is highly recommended for professionals engaged in marriage and family-related services, providing them with invaluable knowledge and expertise to enhance their practice.

Study Modality: The course is offered on a part-time basis in the evenings. Lectures are delivered both in-person and online and alternated throughout the course duration.

  • Canonical, Maltese, and European Aspects of Matrimonial Law
  • Contemporary Family Issues
  • Juridical and Psychological Elements of Marital Consent
  • Matrimonial Jurisprudence
  • Law and Justice in the Church
  • Theology of Marriage
  • Judicial Procedures
  • Practicum in Procedural Law

Practicum Description: The practicum allows students to bridge theoretical knowledge with practical experience. It consists of a limited number of visits to the ecclesiastical tribunal, where participants observe and reflect on the application of judicial procedures within an actual tribunal setting.

Funding Opportunities: Eligible candidates can apply for a bursary of 2,000 EU and may benefit from a tax credit covering 70% of tuition fees under the Get Qualified Scheme.

Recognition and Accreditation of Prior Learning (RPL): Prospective students with prior expertise or skills may access the course and/or gain exemptions from certain parts through the University’s RPL process.
