Desktop video conferencing / Remote teaching

The University of Malta uses Zoom for desktop video conferencing and remote teaching. Zoom allows meeting participants to ask questions and interact during the session. Tutors can share their presentation files or the entire screen, use breakout rooms, and record their sessions.

Please note that Zoom meetings created with a UM Zoom account have a join meeting link address that contains the words ‘universityofmalta’. May we remind you that the use of the University of Malta Zoom education licence is strictly for University use and not for any commercial purpose.

Note: The University of Malta also supports the use of Google Meet for online meetings. For remote teaching, tutors should make use of Zoom instead.

Activate your UM Zoom account

All staff and students are required to first activate their Zoom account and should ensure that they are signed in with the UM account (via SSO) to the Zoom client to gain access to additional features and for more secure use of Zoom.

After activating their account, academic staff can schedule Zoom sessions in the VLE for remote teaching. To schedule meetings, staff can use Zoom for Google Workspace add-on or Zoom client .

Zoom can also be used through Android and iOS mobile-device apps.

Remote teaching

Remote teaching involves the streaming of a lecture in real-time. It is highly recommended that students keep their microphone audio muted while not actively participating or asking a question. It is also suggested that students keep their video camera on during the online class; a virtual background is provided by the Zoom software for privacy. Students should discuss any concerns they may have with their lecturers about the use of cameras.
