Cataloguing

Cataloguing

At the Cataloguing Department, our main task is creating and maintaining a database of bibliographic records for books, theses and online resources.

These records enable users to conduct searches for relevant material via HyDi (Library’s online catalogue). The database follows internationally-recognised standards for cataloguing (AACR2) and classification (Library of Congress). A number of entry points enable the database to be searched by title, author or ISBN, and an authority list of Library of Congress subject headings also allows browsing for subject terms.

Cataloguing tasks are carried out by the central Cataloguing Department at the Main Library and also by individual members of staff operating from various outlying sections and branches, such as Valletta Campus Library, Junior College Library and the Faculty of Arts Library.

All our cataloguers are familiar with the latest developments in cataloguing and classification especially for newly emerging e-resources. An important part of the work involves training for new members of staff and continuous liaising between the main Cataloguing Department and the branch libraries. Our main aim is to ensure that all newly acquired material, passed on from the Acquisitions Department, is available to users within the shortest possible time.
