Title: ALICIA (All Condition Operations and Innovative Cockpit Infrastructure)

Duration: 2009-2014

Funding scheme: EU Seventh Framework Programme for Research (Grant agreement ID: 233682)

Overall budget: EUR 47,233,680

UM budget: EUR 330,000

UM coordinator: Prof. Ing. David Zammit Mangion

ALICIA focused on the development of the capability of all-weather operation in civil commercial aircraft operations. It brought together over 40 partners from the industry and academia within the European Research Area and was coordinated by Agusta-Westland.

Within the project, the University of Malta was tasked with developing technologies for pilot guidance during taxi operations in low visibility conditions to enable safe manoeuvring in the airfield. The University of Malta worked closely with Latecoere and Onera and developed prototypes of cockpit guidance systems to enable pilots to taxi aircraft safely in airfields under low visibility conditions. The prototypes were integrated with sensor systems and evaluated through field trials held at Malta International Airport in 2014.

The University of Malta also co-organised a workshop at the 2012 Human Computer Interaction (HCI) conference in Brussels and participated in a dissemination event in which it exhibited the concepts it developed.
