Title: CLEAN FLIGHT 2

Duration: 2015-2018

Funding scheme: MCST National R&I Programme (R&I-2013-025)

Funds: c. Eur 200,000

Principal investigators: Dr Ing. Kenneth Chircop and Prof. Ing. David Zammit Mangion

CLEAN-FLIGHT 2 continued the work of the CLEAN FLIGHT project (R&I-2011-021) by further developing the technology and concept of operations (CONOPS) for optimal climbs and descents of commercial aircraft within Maltese airspace in terms of flight time, fuel burn, or a combination of both. By making use of these optimal routes, the total running cost of airlines can be reduced. In addition, environmental benefits are to be gained, namely a reduction in carbon emissions and also in the noise footprint.

The main objectives of CLEAN-FLIGHT 2 were to take the CONOPS to a higher maturity level and to develop a software tool which would allow end users (ATCOs and pilots) to perform single or multiple aircraft optimisation on any selected flights within Maltese airspace. The consortium consisted of the University of Malta (as lead partner), MATS Ltd and QuAero Ltd.
